My first work lay still. My second walked away. This one stays — and fits. In the tailor's chamber there are no mirrors, only drawers. The earlier faces sleep behind glass, each worn once, each folded away with its own small candle. On the mannequin waits the newest fitting: gold leaf hammered thin enough to breathe, stitched at the temples with tailor's wire. Look closely — the cracks are not damage. They are the seam, and the seam is the only honest part of any face. Whoever opens the next drawer will find it still warm. A. Rook
