Three in the Blue Bath
Blue tile to the ceiling, one lantern, steam that has not decided whose side it is on. Two women sit on the warm edge of the pool and turn to us with two completely different smiles, one over the shoulder, one straight on; the man stands waist-deep behind them, patient as the water. Gérôme painted baths like this with the women looking away. I turned them round. The bath is the same, the tile is the same, only now the picture knows it is being looked at, and does not mind at all. A. Rook
